Cast and Crew of Big Little lies tv series
In this era of golden age of television, movie stars on the small screen should no longer come as a surprise. Reese Witherspoon is even joining in, promoting in HBO’s new tv series Big Little Lies (BLL). This is a seven-episode series, based on Liane Moriarty’s book of the same name, centers on three very different mothers whose small town is shattered by a murder. Episode one airs on Sunday, February 19 at 9 p.m. ET.
In the series, Witherspoon stars as Madeline Martha Mackennzie. This is the first time when the Oscar-winner has been seen on television since she was in an episode of ABC’s The Muppets in 2015. Although she has contibute her voices for The Simpsons and King of the Hill. She’s never had a routine TV series role in her career.
Witherspoon also co-produced Big Little Lies through her Pacific Standard. She is also reunited with her director Jean-Marc Vallee for the project.
Along with Reese Witherspoon , Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and all glammed up to debut with attendance co-stars Adam Scott and Kathryn Newton, among others. Anne Heche was there to support hubby James Tupper, who stars on the show.Reese was joined by her 17-year-old daughter Ava while Nicole got support from her husband Keith Urban.
But Big Little Lies also lets those actors down, with oversimplified scripts that lack implication and seems to track water between big moments. The show feels captured between something sleazy and something more well-off, too scared to move in either direction and ultimately the poorer for it. It’s got Peak TV presentation — the stars, the high-toned direction — and scripts that would fit right in on the ’90s dramas of its writer, David E. Kelley.
Summary of Big Little Lies tv Series
With its cinematic cast, Big Little Lies doesn’t have this problem, because the HBO audience would seemingly watch Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon play auditor for seven hours. The show goes a step ahead by casting these very recognizable faces in housewife and mother roles, adding charm and beauty to what could be a typical domestic play, amongst an bucolic mural.
While the novel the series is based on by Australian author Liane Moriarty, was an exceedingly gratifying airport read, HBO’s production, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Wild and Dallas Buyers Club’s Jean-Marc Vallée, adds layers of elegance that the book lacks. The soundtrack, the intermixed investigation, the shots of the deluge sea—even the talking heads talking smack about Madeline and her friends have much greater sonority and vibrations than the pull quotes that were used to kick off Big Little Lies’ chapters. By playing up the crime at the center of this Monterey drama, Big Little Lies holds the viewer even before the stars show up.
But when they do, it’s utterly delightful. Witherspoon’s Madeline appears to be Election’s Tracy light touch all grown up, now perplexed with an self-centered teenage daughter, an ex-husband with a beautiful new yoga teacher wife, and a first-grader who’s already growing up too fast. Her husband Ed is played by Adam Scott. Laura Dern’s Renata is Madeline’s opposite and her enemy, an abhorred working mom who has joined the board of PayPal. Nicole Kidman plays Celeste, Madeline’s best friend, a beyond-beautiful former lawyer and the mother of twins. And Shailene Woodley is Jane, the mysterious young stranger who enters all of their lives.
What the novel does so beautifully, and the series continues, it maneuver the shark-filled waters of elementary school, for both parents and children. Renata’s daughter arraign Jane’s Ziggy of hurting her on orientation day, quickly turning family against family and drawing lines down the middle of the school. Jane’s devotion to Ziggy and her blunt belief in him is rather sweet, even as tensions rise all around them. The soaring palaces that separate some residents from others is a profound and all too common problem: One of the talking heads describes Jane as a “Dusty old Prius parked outside of a Barney’s.”
There is an abundance of breathtaking material available in any first-grade classroom, but outside of The Slap, Big Little Lies appears to be the first show to delve into with great ardor. Because everything those talking heads are saying is right. You can’t get more bananas than an elementary school telethon. There is always the circumstances of tension between working moms and those who stay at home. Parenting brings with it all sorts of abrupt social shifting and nervousness, for kids and parents both. But it’s the job overall that’s the toughest, as Witherspoon adequaltely conveys in this episode most sentimental scene. Madeline tries to describe to her older daughter just why it’s so hard to see her grow up: It’s because the little girl she used to take such close care of is gone. The job she has spent the last 18 years doing—raising this child—is about to be over for good.
These achievements lift up BLL from airport forage fiction to a cachet event, even though there’s lots of crummy fun to be had. The attack between the moms, the baffling backstories, the pieces that slowly get put into place: It all adds up a mesmerizing package. BLL bright finish points to the falsehood of the perfect life: Of the three leads, Celeste’s life appears to be the most seemingly immaculate.
